Reading Survey Results

Thank you to those families that were able to complete the Reading Survey, it was really useful to guide our school development in the Year of Reading.

The results were

·        98% of our families that answered the survey said that their children enjoyed reading.

·        93% of families are able to read quite often with their child.

·        91% of families said they look forward to reading with their child.

·        97% recognised that it is important for children to read for fun.

This was a great picture of our reading community. There were also so many lovely comments about the reading experiences some of our children encounter.

Goldstone Reading Recommendations!

When asked what would support families to read more often, many parents stated that they would like to have recommendations from the school about which books the children should read in different year groups. We have looked into this and have used a site to find year group recommendations. https://www.booksfortopics.com/ This site has recommendations for different topics and interests. If the books are not available from school, the Hangleton Local Library is able to order books on request.

The year group recommendations for books can be found below. Class teachers are also available to recommend books and children can bring them home to read as well as read them at school.

Authorfy has videos and writing challenges that children might like to watch at home; during the Year of Reading this is also free. Attached is the first newsletter from them and you may recognise our adopted author, Guy Bass, on the front. https://authorfy.com/

Later this year we will also be holding a reading evening for parents in Key Stage 2 to come and find out what reading looks like in school and offer tips on how you can support your child at home.

2026 is the 'Year of Reading' - this is a national campaign to reinvigorate reading and we hope you will join us and 'Go All In'!

Supporting your child with reading

Supporting your child with reading

Although your child will be taught to read at school, you can have a huge impact on their reading journey by continuing their practice at home.

There are two types of reading book that your child may bring home:

A reading practice book. This will be at the correct phonic stage for your child. They should be able to read this fluently and independently.

A sharing book.  Your child will not be able to read this on their own. This book is for you both to read and enjoy together.

Reading practice book

This book has been carefully matched to your child’s current reading level. If your child is reading it with little help, please don’t worry that it’s too easy – your child needs to develop fluency and confidence in reading.

Listen to them read the book. Remember to give them lots of praise – celebrate their success! If they can’t read a word, read it to them. After they have finished, talk about the book together.

Sharing book

In order to encourage your child to become a lifelong reader, it is important that they learn to read for pleasure. The sharing book is a book they have chosen for you to enjoy together.

Please remember that you shouldn’t expect your child to read this alone. Read it to or with them. Discuss the pictures, enjoy the story, predict what might happen next, use different voices for the characters, explore the facts in a non-fiction book. The main thing is that you have fun!
